Wildlife Sanctuaries

Wildlife sanctuaries are notified under Section 18 of the Wildlife Protection Act to safeguard species and their habitats while permitting limited regulated activities.

• Bhitarkanika — saltwater crocodiles and mangroves
• Keoladeo Ghana — migratory waterbirds (Ramsar site)
• Periyar — elephant and tiger habitat in Western Ghats
• Chilika — Asia's largest brackish-water lagoon
